The short version: MP4 keeps the picture, MP3 throws it away. Everything else — file size, where it plays, what you can do with it afterwards — follows from that one difference. What each format actually is
MP4 is a container. Think of it as a box with labelled compartments: one for a video track, one or more for audio tracks, and often extras like subtitles and chapter markers. The full name is MPEG-4 Part 14. Inside a typical MP4 you will find H.264 video and AAC audio, which is the combination virtually every device on earth can decode without extra software.
MP3 is a codec and a file format in one — MPEG-1 Audio Layer III. There are no compartments. It holds one thing: a compressed audio stream. That narrowness is exactly why it has survived since 1993 while flashier formats came and went. Nothing refuses to play an MP3.

That size row is the one that surprises people. A 1080p MP4 can easily be twenty times larger than the MP3 of the same recording, because the picture is doing almost all the work. If you genuinely only need the words, converting to MP3 saves a great deal of space — the MP3 converter takes the same link.
When to choose MP4
- You need to see it. A demo, a tutorial, a recorded presentation with slides — the picture carries the meaning.
- You are going to edit it. Every editor on every platform opens H.264 MP4 without a conversion step.
- You are handing it to someone else. MP4 is the format least likely to produce a “this file won’t open” reply.
- You might want the audio later. You can always extract MP3 from an MP4. You can never recover the video from an MP3.
When to choose MP3
- It is a talking-head recording. An interview, a lecture, a conference talk you gave — nothing is lost by dropping the picture.
- You will listen while doing something else. Driving, walking, washing up. Audio players handle MP3 natively and keep playing with the screen off.
- Storage or data is tight. Ten hours of speech at 128 kbps fits in about a gigabyte.
Which bitrate, which resolution?
For MP3, 192 kbps is the sensible default and is what the converter preselects. 128 kbps is fine for speech and noticeably smaller; 256 and 320 kbps preserve more detail in music. Worth being clear about a common misconception: a higher bitrate cannot add quality that was never in the source. Encoding a mediocre recording at 320 kbps just gives you a larger mediocre recording.

Format choice is a technical decision; whether you should be converting the video at all is a separate one.
