Pick a quality in the converter and you are really answering two questions at once: how sharp do you need this, and how much disk space are you willing to spend on it. The numbers — 360p, 720p, 1080p, 4K — describe the first. This article makes the second one concrete.
What the numbers mean
Each label is the vertical pixel count of the picture. 1080p means 1,080 rows of pixels stacked top to bottom, with 1,920 across. The “p” stands for progressive scan, which just means every line is drawn in each frame rather than every other line.

Notice the jumps. Going from 720p to 1080p costs about 80% more space. Going from 1080p to 4K costs roughly four times as much. A ten-minute clip at 4K lands near 900 MB; the same clip at 720p is about 120 MB. Treat those as estimates — the real figure depends on how much motion is in the footage, since a static talking head compresses far better than a drone shot over a forest.
Which one should you actually pick?
Match the resolution to the screen you will watch it on, not to the largest number available. Past a certain point the extra pixels are invisible and you are just paying for storage.
- Phone — 480p or 720p. On a screen that size, 1080p is largely wasted.
- Laptop or tablet — 720p for reference material, 1080p when detail matters (a UI walkthrough, anything with small text on screen).
- Television — 1080p is comfortable on most sets. Go to 4K only if the TV is genuinely 4K and you are sitting close enough to tell.
- Editing or archiving — take the highest the source offers. You can always scale down later; you cannot invent detail that was never captured.
- Slow connection or a data cap — 360p. It is not pretty, but it is watchable and it is tiny.
The converter preselects 720p because it is the best default for most people: sharp on a phone or laptop, and a fraction of the size of the higher options.
Why is a quality greyed out or missing?
Because the source does not provide it. Resolution is fixed at upload — a video recorded and uploaded at 720p has no 1080p version sitting somewhere waiting to be unlocked. Upscaling a 720p file to 1080p adds pixels but no detail; it just makes the file bigger and slightly softer.
The converter lists only what can genuinely be delivered. If 4K is absent from the chips, the original was not uploaded in 4K. That is also why the option list appears only after the link has been checked — until then there is nothing honest to show you.
What “audio merged in processing” means
Pick 1440p or 2160p and an amber note appears. This is worth understanding, because it is a real technical constraint rather than a caveat for its own sake.
At high resolutions, video is commonly delivered as a video-only stream, with the sound carried separately. To produce a normal MP4 that plays with sound, those two streams have to be combined during processing. That merge is what the note refers to. It adds a little time, and it happens only where it is legally and technically permitted. At 1080p and below the stream usually already carries its audio, which is why the badge reads “Audio included” instead.
Frame rate and bitrate, briefly
Resolution is not the whole story. Frame rate (24, 30 or 60 fps) governs how smooth motion looks — 60 fps is noticeably smoother for gameplay and sport, and largely irrelevant for a lecture. Bitrate is how much data per second the encoder spends; a 1080p file at a low bitrate can look worse than a 720p file at a generous one.
Both are set by whoever uploaded the video, and a converter cannot improve them. What it can do is avoid making things worse by re-encoding unnecessarily.
If you only need the sound
